A conversation with TED HOPE -

Building Storyworlds

the art, craft & biz of storytelling in 21c

Episode #01 - TED HOPE

running time 24:50

Welcome to the first episode of “Building Storyworlds - the art, craft & biz of storytelling in 21c.”  The podcast is a companion to a course that is being taught this fall at Columbia University. The goal of the podcast is to stimulate discussion and debate around the evolution of storytelling.

Our first guest is award winning producer Ted Hope.  Co-founder of This is that & Good Machine, Ted has produced over sixty films, including three Sundance Grand Prize winners and the first features of Alan Ball, Todd Field, Michel Gondry, Nicole Holofcener, and Ang Lee. A strong supporter of a truly free film movement Ted believes that– due to the democratization of the tools which enable & spread creative expression — a self-supporting artistic middle class is now establishing itself. But in order for all those who are creating to also sustain, we must be as rigorous in thought & action towards the creation of an independent infrastructure. Are you up for the challenge?

Topics of discussion

The future of film - Ted shares the thoughts behind a recent post to his blog  Hope for Film.

Finding new froms of value

The role of scarcity and abundance in storytelling

The internet of things - the emergence of a storytelling layer over the real world

Generalist vs. Specialist
